Russia successfully test-fires powerful ICBM

Russia has successfully tested its latest intercontinental ballistic missile, known as Sarmat, in the northwest of the country.

According to the defense ministry, the ICBM weighs two-hundred metric tons. It has a higher range than its predecessors which allows it to fly over the North or the South Poles and strike targets anywhere on earth. Sarmat is intended to replace the Soviet-designed Voyevoda, the world's heaviest ICBM, known as "Satan" in the West. Russian President Vladimir Putin says the missile cannot be intercepted. Under Putin, Russia has steadily boosted its military capabilities amid continued tensions with NATO.
