The Nigeran Army has
said that its troops of Operation Lafiya Dole in continuation of
operation Deep Puch 11 against Boko Haram on Sunday crushed fleeing
terroriststs in, Gonori area of Yobe State.
Disclosing this on Sunday to newsmen in Maiduguri, the Director Army
Public Relations, Brig Gen Sani Kukashekau Usman said so many ammunition
including Anti-aircraft gun were recovered from the fleeing insurgents
while two soldiers who sustained minor injuries are currently recieving
treatment in the Brigade Ambulance.
” As a result of the ongoing clearance operations through Operation DEEP
PUNCH II in Operation LAFIYA DOLE, some desperate Boko Haram terrorists
attempting to escape the theatre through one of the formidable blocking
positions in Goniri, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, had
been severely dealt with on Friday 9th February 2018.
” The terrorists in attempt to penetrate through the troops lying in
wait were mercilessly trashed. The troops destroyed their Vehicle-borne
Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), neutralized quite a number and
wounded several other escaping Boko Haram terrorists. Similarly, they
recovered an Anti-aircraft gun with long belt of ammunitions, an AK-47
Rifle and other items.
” Immediately the terrorists encountered the troops around 6:20pm, they
adopted rapid firing, while the troops responded with maximum volume of
fire. The troops’ tank tactically flanked and crushed the IED laden
vehicle of the terrorists, ” Usman said.
He added that the response was very efficient as only 2 soldiers
sustained minor injuries, saying that the two brave soldiers are
currently receiving treatment in the Brigade Field Ambulance.
Continuing the Army Spokesman said : ” Preliminary investigation reveals
that some unscrupulous Boko Haram terrorists informants might have
hinted the terrorist group that the troops had moved along with their
equipment out of the blocking position the previous day, hoping that
penetration through the area would have been easy. Disappointedly, they
met gallant troops who proved too impenetrable, frustrated their effort
and cleared their doubt.
” It should be noted that having been forced out of their hideouts due
to the ongoing Operation DEEP PUNCH II, the remnants of the Boko Haram
terrorists have resorted to marauding around isolated communities and
fleeing the theatre. Nevertheless, the troops have remained resilient
and on maximum alert, full of high morale,” the statement reads

The Bayelsa State Government will this
week rename the popular Glory Drive, an access road in Igbogene,
Yenagoa, after former President Olusegun Obasanjo; as part of activities
to mark the sixth anniversary of the Seriake Dickson-led
administration.
Obasanjo, who is also expected to visit
the state for the inauguration of several projects by the Bayelsa
government, will also be at the Ijaw National Academy to interact with
Secondary School students drawn from various parts of the state.
At a press briefing on Saturday,
Secretary to the State Government, Kemela Okara; Commissioner for
Information and Orientation, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson; his education
counterpart, Jonathan Obuebite and other government officials told
journalists that the event will commence on Monday and end on Saturday.
The SSG, who is also the Chairman,
Central Working Committee, said the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP), Mr. Uche Secondus; Gen Alani Akinrinade (rtd) and other
dignitaries were also expected in the state to officially declare open
some projects.
Some of the projects earmarked for
unveiling, Okara said, would include the state secretariat annex,
cultural boulevard, pavilion at Oxbow Lake, health insurance office,
Doctors’ Quarters, Bayelsa Specialist Hospital, Drug Mart, aquaculture
village, flag-off of a private refinery in Gbarain, among others.
Amid several command performances,
Obasanjo will also visit children of the academy in Kaiama,
Kolokuma/Opokuma local council, where he would answer questions from the
students on Saturday.
In his remarks Iworiso-Markson said the
government had achieved a lot in the last six, noting that though the
governor was not known for praise-singing himself, it was expedient to
showcase some of his achievements to the state and the world at large.
“These projects have a tremendous impact
on our people and it is the very reason why we are in government. Some
of the projects to be commissioned are already in use. But we are doing
this because of certain misconceptions that some of these projects are
being done by the federal government”, the commissioner said.
