Gunmen kill gov’s aide, shoot wife


Gunmen yesterday assassinated Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom’s Principal Special Assistant on Knowledge Economy and Investments, Dr. Tavershima Adyorough. Adyorough’s killing brought to two the number of the governor’s aides murdered since he assumed office on May 29, 2015.

The first was the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Security, Mr. Denen Igbana, who was assassinated in May last year. The two aides hailed from the Jechira geopolitical axis of Benue North-West Senatorial District. It was learnt that the gunmen, who invaded Adyorough’s residence at the Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC) quarters, Nyiman area of Makurdi metropolis about 12:30a.m., also shot his wife.
The wife, sources said, was still alive but “in critical condition,” at an undisclosed hospital in Makurdi. In a swift reaction, Ortom described the killing as unacceptable and condemnable and requested security oper-atives to immediately swing into action to arrest those behind the dastardly act. He said Adyorough was a competent and dependable aide who delivered on assignments with dedication and honesty.

Ortom sympathised with the immediate family of the deceased, the government and people of the state on the loss and pledged that he would support security agencies in apprehending the culprits. He urged those with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the culprits to make it available to security agents. The state Police Commissioner, Mr. Bashir Makama, confirmed Adyorough’s assassination. “He was killed in his house by bandits, who also shot his wife.

The woman is currently responding to treatment at a government hospital in Makurdi,” the commissioner said. Makama added that the motive for Adyorough’s murder was yet to be established, but expressed optimism that the culprits would soon be apprehended and brought to book. He said: “We shall fish out the perpetrators of this heinous crime and bring them to justice.”
The commissioner appealed to members of the public with any clue to volunteer it to the police to assist in the arrest of the murderers. Ortom invited Adyorough from the United States to come and contribute his vast knowledge of the economy to his administration. In the United States, Adyorough was the president of the Mutual Union of the Tiv people in America (MUTA).
