A Mayak satellite was launched into space by a Soyuz 2-1v rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on Friday, as a part of the project led by Moscow State Mechanical Engineering University.
Once the Mayak, named after he Russian word for “beacon,” starts to orbit in space, the tiny satellite, which is the size of a loaf of bread, will unfurl a giant pyramid-shaped solar reflector.
The satellite is expected to bounce the sun’s light back towards Earth, shining with a magnitude of about -3.6, which could make it the brightest man-made object in orbit and the fourth-brightest object in space after the Sun, the Moon, and Venus.
