China lodges complaint with US, Western countries over interference

China has lodged protest with several countries over their remarks regarding the death of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Geng Shuang called the remarks irresponsible. Shuang criticized the US, Germany, France and the United Nations for what he described as interfering in the country’s judicial sovereignty. The reaction comes as a group of countries praised the peace laureate for what he fought for as an activist. They also pressured China to release the widow of the peace laureate, who has been under house arrest since 2010.

The 61-year-old laureate was sentenced to jail for inciting subversion of state power in 2009. He also called for sweeping political reforms in China. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate died of liver cancer on Thursday.
