Any threats to authority of China over Hong Kong cross red line: Xi

China's President Xi Jinping has warned against challenges to Beijing's authority over Hong Kong.

The Chinese leader made the comment after swearing in Hong Kong's new leader, Carrie Lam, on the 20th anniversary of the territory's handover from the UK. Lam took oath of office under China's national flag. Thousands of police forces have been deployed to provide security and quell possible clashes between pro-independence and pro-Beijing demonstrators.
Minor scuffles have broken out between the 2 sides. There have been growing calls for independence in Hong Kong since 2014 when Beijing refused to grant universal suffrage to the former British colony.
