A Court in the US says the government can seize a tower owned by an Iranian charity group known as the Alavi Foundation.
The court claims the group is controlled by the Iranian government. It also says the Alavi Foundation has been complicit in financial dealings with Iran, in violation of Washington's sanctions against the country. Earlier, the foundation’s attorneys described the investigation as biased. They said the charity organization is independent of the Iranian government. The attorneys also noted that the Alavi Foundation spends its money on schools, health care and promotion of Persian culture. The US court verdict allows prosecutors to seize the 36-floor building which is estimated to be worth nearly one-billion US dollars. Under the US law, the charity has the right to appeal the ruling.
