Clashes erupt after Eid prayers in Kashmir

Indian security forces have engaged in clashes with protesters in the disputed Kashmir region.

Clashes erupted as thousands of pro-independence demonstrators took to the streets in Indian-administered Kashmir following the Eid al-Fitr prayers. Indian forces used tear gas and pellet guns to confront the enraged protesters. In recent weeks, violence has flared up in the volatile region. On Saturday, one Indian soldier and two suspected pro-independence fighters were killed in an intense shootout on the outskirts of Srinagar. More than 68-thousand people have been killed in Indian-administered Kashmir violence since 1989.
