UN chief welcomes Syria de-escalation zones brokered by Russia, Turkey & Iran

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed an agreement brokered by Russia, Turkey and Iran for creating de-escalation zones in Syria.

A spokesman for Guterres, Stephane Dujarric said the UN chief is encouraged by the deal, calling it crucial for the improvement of the lives of the Syrian people. On Thursday, representatives from Russia, Turkey and Iran together with delegations from the Syrian government and the country’s armed opposition sat for negotiations in the Kazakh capital Astana. The trio designated the four regions of Idlib, Aleppo, Latakia and Homs as de-escalation zones. Syria’s foreign-backed opposition has nixed the deal, saying it is against the country’s territorial integrity. The Syrian government, however, has hailed the move, describing it as advancement.
