Clashes erupt in Istanbul during Labor Day rally

Clashes have erupted between the Turkish police and protesters who have taken to the streets of Istanbul to mark Labor Day.

Police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators who defied a ban and marched to center of the city. Several demonstrators have been arrested. Greeks have also gathered in front of a government building to mark May Day. They also announced a 24-hour national strike to protest against the country’s austerity measures.

People in several Asian countries including Philippines, Taiwan, Indonesia and South Korea rallied in the streets, calling for improving their work environment. Streets of Hong Kong are also witnessing massive protests. More rallies are expected in Europe and the US. May Day has traditionally been used to promote workers' rights and protest poor labor conditions.
