The Italian rescue ships have brought some three thousand refugees to the southern port of Sicily.
Italy’s coastguards and charity group Doctors Without Borders coordinated about twenty separate rescue operations over the past twenty-four hours. The rescued refugees were travelling on separate vessels, including three small wooden boats and sixteen rubber dinghies. More than 20-thousand asylum seekers, including over two thousand minors, landed on Italian shores between the months of January and March this year. The latest figures show a thirty percent hike in the number of refugees arriving in Europe compared to the same period in 20-16.
