The Scottish government has formally asked UK Prime Minister Theresa May to allow it to hold a second independence referendum following the beginning of Britain’s exit process from the European Union.
Nicola Sturgeon called for early discussions between London and Edinburg on an article of the Scottish constitution that would enable Scotland to hold a new referendum. The Scottish legislature has already given its blessing to a second referendum when it voted in favor of the move by 69 votes. The parliament in Edinburg cannot trigger any referendum without Westminster’s permission. 55 percent of the Scottish people rejected independence from Britain in 2014, but voted in favor of remaining within the EU in the 2016’s referendum on Brexit.
