Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has rejected a U.S. allegation on Moscow’s supplying arms to Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan as unsubstantiated. Lavrov made the remarks after the U-S commander in Afghanistan said he was "not refuting" reports that Russia was providing support, including weapons, to the Taliban. General John Nicholson, however, failed to provide specifics about Russia's role in Afghanistan. Earlier on Monday, a senior US military official told reporters in Kabul that Russia was giving machine guns and other medium-weight weapons to the Taliban. Meanwhile, Russia says its contacts with the war-torn nation are limited to safeguarding. Washington is concerned about losing its influence in Afghanistan, as Moscow has provided Kabul with military hardware and helped the Afghan government to reconcile with the Taliban in recent months.
