People hold a new protest in the Turkish port city of Istanbul to denounce the country’s electoral body for refusing to annul the result of last week’s referendum.
The protesters gathered in Istanbul’s iconic Beshiktash district. They chanted slogans against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, while holding up posters of Kemal Ataturk- the founder of modern Turkey. Local media reported that at least 19 people were detained during the peaceful demonstration. This comes as Turkey’s main opposition CHP party has pledged to employ all legal ways to appeal against the vote result even after the decision by the high electoral body. Opposition parties claim that the referendum on the expansion of presidential powers was tilted in favor of the “yes” camp because unstamped ballot papers were included in the vote count.
