Japanese people protest US new military base in Okinawa

Thousands of protesters have rallied in the Japanese capital Tokyo against the construction of a new US military base on Okinawa Island.

Protesters held large placards reading “NO”. They marched before gathering to hear speeches from activists. The new US military facility will be built as part of a plan aimed at relocating Futenma Airbase to Hennoko, an area in Okinawa’s north. The move has caused continuous opposition from locals and Okinawa’s Governor Takeshi Onaga. The US has more than 100,000 troops on the island where their presence is associated with noise and crime.
