France presidential election; Latest updates

French voters are heading to the polling booths to cast their ballots in the first round of the presidential election.

Some 47 million French nationals are eligible to vote at 69-thousand polling stations. They will choose their next president from the eleven candidates vying for the post.

France’s overseas territories kicked off the voting one day ahead of the mainland on Saturday. The two candidates who receive the most votes will compete in a runoff slated on May 7.

This year’s presidential election in France is one of the most significant in recent times, as the four leading candidates span the extremes of the political spectrum and have very adverse ideas about the future of France and the European Union.
