The British defense secretary says the UK will protect Gibraltar’s sovereignty after the EU said Spain must have a direct say in the territory’s future.
Fallon was the latest British official who reacted to EU’s comments. Prime Minister Theresa May earlier said the UK will never cede Gibraltar without the consent of the territory’s people. She added that the British government is absolutely dedicated to working with Gibraltar for the best possible outcome on the UK’s divorce from the EU.
Britain and Spain have been engaged in a bitter sovereignty row over the territory for years. The rocky enclave was seized from Spain during a war in 1704 and was handed to Britain in 17-13 under a multi-national treaty.
