US House vote to roll back internet privacy rules

The US House of Representatives has voted to repeal privacy rules that could prevent internet providers from selling and sharing customers’ data without their permission.

The House voted 215 to 205 to reject the rules, and sent the legislation to President Donald Trump for signing. The White House had earlier said that Trump strongly supported the repeal of the rules. Last week, the Senate voted to reverse the legislation. Under the measure, which was passed last year, internet service providers were required to ask for customers’ permission to collect their personal information. Privacy campaigners say repealing the previous laws without a new legislative framework in place could create an enforcement vacuum.
