The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees says the number of Syrians who have fled their country due to the conflict there has surpassed five million people.
The figure is that of registered refugees only and the exact number is expected to be much higher. The UN refugee agency says the majority of the displaced people live in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan. The UNHCR has called on the European countries and the U-S to live up to their plans and take in their quota of refugees. According to the agency, 2017 saw an increase in the number of asylum seekers compared to last year.
