The British prime minister has signed the letter that will officially launch the exit of the UK from the European Union.
The letter will be handed to European Council President Donald Tusk on Wednesday. Theresa May will then have two years to negotiate the terms of the divorce before it comes into effect in March 2019. The outcome of the negotiations will shape the future of Britain's economy. May is expected to have a hard time preserving the unity of Britain after the divorce, with Scotland already having called for a second referendum to leave the UK.
