The UN special rapporteur on protecting human rights has warned that the US president might allow torture in interrogations, saying that Trump is the first democratically-elected head of state to positively advocate torture.
Emmerson condemned Trump’s comments about his willingness to authorize the use of torture and extolling torture as a weapon against terrorism shortly after his inauguration. He said that Trump's comments about the use of torture showed a staggering level of ill-preparedness to govern. He noted that the remark in itself has undermined the international prohibition on torture. He also suggested that senior officials from former US president George W. Bush's administration should be prosecuted for allowing torture.
