Scotland's parliament backs the first minister's proposal for holding a second independence referendum between autumn 2018 and spring 2019.
Lawmakers decided to support Nicola Sturgeon's independence bid after hours of heated debate. Sturgeon laid out the challenges Scotland could face following Brexit. The first minister warned about an unknown future for Scotland after Britain's divorce from the EU. Following the vote, the British government said it would not enter negotiations with the Scottish government over the referendum. British Prime Minister Theresa May had already signaled London’s disagreement with the plan arguing that now is not the time. The independence motion needs the British government’s final approval for implementation.
