Native Americans and their supporters have staged a rally in Washington DC to denounce the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline that cuts through tribal lands.
The protesters marched towards the White House, chanting slogans such as “water is life”. Native Americans said the pipeline desecrates tribal lands and poses a threat to environment. The Dakota Access Pipeline will transfer crude oil from North Dakota to southern Illinois. The Obama administration had stopped the project and called for an environmental impact review. However, President Donald Trump restarted the construction work with an executive order shortly after taking office in January. The multi-billion-dollar project has sparked widespread protests by Native Americans and environmentalists for months.
