Myanmar's military has defended its brutal crackdown on the Rohingya Muslims. It also rejected reports of gross human rights violations by the army in Rakhine state.
The remarks come amid mounting accusations of human rights abuses by Myanmar’s army. United Nations experts say the violations could amount to crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing. More than 70-thousand Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh since the army crackdown started last October. The military is accused of committing acts of violence such as slitting throats, indiscriminate shootings, burning houses with people tied up inside and gang-raping women in Rakhine state. The Rohingya Muslims are described by the UN as one of the world’s most persecuted minorities.
