EU states not obligated to admit refugees

The ruling came over the case of a Syrian family applying for temporary visa in Belgium which was rejected by the authorities. The decision was made despite earlier advice of the E-C-J’s advocate general that such visas had to be issued under E-U law. It spares member states from consideration of humanitarian grounds, cutting off a possible channel for asylum seekers into the bloc. EU officials have welcomed the decision as it is in line with the bloc’s efforts to stem the flow of refugees.
