The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has criticized the idea of
creation of safe zones inside Syria for displaced people, stressing that
it would not work. Grandi, who has just completed a visit to Syria, said his agency has not been approached about the plan. The UN High Commissioner for refugees noted that there were no details on what would constitute a safe zone or how it would be enforced. Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump said he will absolutely create safe zones in Syria for refugees escaping violence. However, he did not provide details about the plans. The Syrian government said any attempt to create safe zones for refugees without coordinating with Damascus would be unsafe and violate Syria's sovereignty.
