UN slams Israel for 'lenient sentence' handed down to soldier

The UN Human Rights Council's scathing remark about an 18-month sentence handed down to an Israeli soldier, who killed a wounded Palestinian, sparks outrage among Israeli officials.

Israeli minister of military affairs Avigdor Liberman called the UN body a council not on human rights but on hatred of Israel. Education Minister Naftali Bennett dismissed the criticism of the ruling. The Israeli minister of transportation and intelligence affairs denounced the condemnation as ugly. Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said the UN Human Rights Council was completely divorced from reality. The barrage of criticism was leveled against the UN body after it described Israeli soldier Elor Azaria's 18-month jail term as lenient.
