A report by the world body says more than 120-thousand Nigerians will
likely suffer what it calls catastrophic famine-like conditions caused
by the terrorist group. The UN says this would be on top of the 11
million people already confronting severe food shortages there. The
report predicts Africa's biggest humanitarian crisis in northeast
Nigeria will likely deteriorate during the lean food season between June
and August. Worst affected is Borno state, the birthplace of Boko
Haram, which may hold 65 percent of those expected to face famine
conditions. Corruption and conflict between the government and aid
agencies is compounding the crisis. Boko Haram has committed numerous
atrocities in Nigeria as well as neighboring Chad and Cameroon since
2009.
