Germany has announced the postponement of a summit with Israel following Tel Aviv’s controversial new settlements law. A German government spokesman says Chancellor Angela Merkel and other top officials will not meet with the Israeli premier and his cabinet on May 10 in Jerusalem al-Quds. The spokesman said the meeting will take place next year. Israel’s Haaretz newspaper said the delay was due to Merkel’s disapproval of Israel’s new settlements law. Last week, Israel passed a new law that permits thousands of settler units built on private Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank. The European Union has condemned the legislation. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said it is in contravention of international law. The Israeli premier has announced more than five-thousand settlement units since US President Donald Trump’s inauguration.
