Syrian govt. strongly opposed to Assad remova

The United Nations has stopped using the phrase "political transition" to describe the goal of next week's Syria peace talks in Geneva. A spokesperson for UN envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura says the negotiations will be entirely guided by U.N. Security Council Resolution 2254, which talks specifically about governance, a new constitution and elections in Syria. De Mistura had previously said the talks are aimed at bringing about political transition in the country. Anti-Syria groups interpret the phrase as the removal of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad from power. Damascus has totally rejected any plan to remove Assad as a non-starter, saying only the Syrian people can choose their president or government through elections.
