Saudi FM in Iraq amid heightened tensions

Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister has made a rare and unannounced visit to Iraq amid simmering tensions between the two countries.
Adel Al-Jubeir led a high ranking Saudi delegation during talks with top officials including Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi in Baghdad. Jubeir also held talks with his Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim Al-Jaafari. According to Iraqi media, Ja’afari asked the Saudi foreign minister to clarify Riyadh’s position on Turkey’s controversial troop deployment in northern Iraq. Reports also say the two top diplomats discussed the latest developments in the region. Baghdad has repeatedly accused Saudi Arabia of supporting Daesh and other terror groups operating inside Iraq. In 20-16, the Saudis were forced to remove their ambassador to Baghdad after angry Iraqi lawmakers said he repeatedly interfered in their country's internal affairs
