US President Donald Trump held talks with visiting Japanese Prime
Minister Shinzo Abe at the White House on Friday. The two discussed
security issues, investment plans and an upcoming golf face-off.
However, Internet users and media were focused on something else: the
two leaders’ awkward handshake. As is the protocol, Abe offered to shake hands in front of the press, but that turned out to be a bad idea.
For the next twenty seconds, he was at the mercy of Trump’s stiff (and notorious) grip.
Trump seemed to be clutching on Abe’s hand and pulling it forcefully towards him.
The US President was also lost in translation, unable to understand what the Japanese reporters were telling Abe. The Japanese Prime Minister was helpful enough to explain to a curious Trump that photographers were asking for him to “look at me” – but that did not clear out the confusion as Trump kept looking at the clicking lenses while Abe was looking at him.
After patting the back of Abe’s hand, Trump finally let go.
Abe’s immediate wince told a story of relief mixed with discomfort – and probably pain too.
