China warns US against destabilizing East Asia

China has lashed out at the US stance on East China Sea islands, saying it is putting regional stability in East Asia at risk.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s statement came in response to remarks by US Defense Secretary James Mattis about Beijing's control over the islands. In a press conference in Tokyo, Mattis said the US will continue to recognize Japanese administration of the islands. He also said Washington remains committed to defending Japanese territory, including the islands. Tokyo and Beijing have a long-running dispute over the islands that lie between Taiwan and Okinawa. Japan administers the islets and calls them Senkaku while China refers to them as Diaoyu.
