British MPs vote to start Brexit

British lawmakers have overwhelmingly voted in favor of a bill which empowers Prime Minister Theresa May to trigger the country’s exit from the EU.

Members of the House of Commons voted for the legislation to start negotiations on Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty. The approval brings Brexit a significant step closer. The law is now set to be sent to the House of Lords where there may be more opposition from unelected lawmakers. After its ratification at the House of Lords, May will be on course to begin the two-year withdrawal process from the EU by the end of March as she has promised. Britons voted to leave the EU in a referendum on June.
