UN special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura has questioned the United States’ engagement in Syria. He says Washington needs to decide whether it’s interested in just fighting Daesh or in defeating the group.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference De Mistura added that the current ceasefire in Syria is holding better than previous ones. He said the Astana talks will focus on cessation of hostilities, while the Geneva negotiations must see if there is any window for political talks. The UN envoy emphasized the need for an inclusive political solution to defeat terrorist groups in Syria.
