UN warns Trump not to reinstate waterboarding

The top U-N torture expert has warned the U-S president that endorsing torture techniques is illegal and has catastrophic global consequences.

The UN Special Rapporteur on Torture says if Donald Trump revives waterboarding and other torture methods as interrogation techniques, more countries are likely to follow his lead. Nils Melzer warned that the return of torture business will be an ultimate disgrace for all humanity. He said torture is known to consistently produce false confessions and unreliable or misleading information. The U-N official stressed that under international law, the prohibition against torture is absolute and when used in the context of armed conflict, such techniques could amount to war crimes. The U-S president has repeatedly said he supports waterboarding during interrogations despite it being prohibited.
